Water Lantern Festival

  • Indications: remembrance, family activity
  • Daily Dose: A beautiful sunset amongst like-minded individuals who may be grieving a loved one-tranquil
  • Side Effects: The releasing point near the water is a little muddy/rocky (comfortable shoes), long venue lines, maybe bring chairs

This was definitely one for the books! It was such a peaceful relaxing time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. We had fun customizing our water lanterns. They were both so different yet so meaningful.

Akeem dedicated his lantern to his grandmother and I dedicated mine to my mother- both beautiful souls that we’ve lost along the way, but helped to shape who we are today and will be in our hearts as we embrace our path into the future.

I took a moment to dedicate each side of my water lantern to something different: one side was the past, one side was the present, and one side was the future! I did this because I believe you should always remember where you came and allow that fuel to motivate you to where you’re going.

I believe the event started around 5 PM and went until 9 PM. Watching the sunset across the water was absolutely gorgeous. We were surrounded with people with a like mindset who are reminiscing on memories and creating a way to honor and remember loved ones whether friends, family members, or pets.

Water is love and hold memories, I believe that’s why people feel at peace when they are around bodies of water. Before we released our water lanterns into the Potomac River we took a walk to look at the food and merchandise trucks. Although the lines stayed pretty long we eventually found some food and drinks! No cocktails-😂! We tried food from a Soulfood truck – and the it was really good!

It was so special sharing this experience with someone that I love and building a bond with. People shared their stories on the microphone to a sea of people that were empathizing with them. The only rule was to be respectful of others experiences. We also had a chance to do a mass meditation exercise. And the music that played in the background was very serene and made you feel tranquil. You could feel a wave of peace over you as everybody took a moment of silence for those love ones that we’ve lost along the way.

I feel like this would be something awesome to do around New Year’s… But I know the water would be way too cold. Next year I will see if the family wants to join. Overall I’d say it’s a great experience, especially if you lost a love one~
